I work in a Title One, elementary school. Many students receive free and reduced lunch and come from a low-income household. Some students are struggling readers. These students end up getting frustrated and develop a lack of interest in the written language. With the rise of technology, many students have moved away from a good book and are now spending most of their time on technological devices. Over the past year, I watched many students develop a passion for reading through graphic novels, as well as non-fiction texts involving animals and sports. They immersed themselves in text that provided sustenance to their learning, both in and out of the classroom. They have a deep desire to learn and to grow, but some lack access to books. My school participated in a 'Give 5 Read 5' program which allowed many students to take home new and gently used books to read over the summer. The push to become better readers is well on its way.
