I teach at a title one school. This means the majority of our students are minorities or from low income families. I have had students tell me before that they couldn't buy a book to read for homework for because their parents needed to pay the electric bill and they couldn't check out books because they owe money they cannot pay to the school library. These are sixth graders whose minds are still like sponges and where we have still have an opportunity to help them develop critical reading skills and MOST importantly, a true love of books. With challenges like these, my students will never have the chance to overcome their obstacles without help from the community around them to supply such fundamentals, like a really good book!
