We are a 240 student,K-8 school on the west side of poor farming county in the Central Valley of California. My students are 98% Hispanic, mostly second language learners whose parents, generally, are not well educated and work in the fields or other agricultural jobs. Many students at our school have not had experiences like: seeing snow, a lake, the ocean, a city; going to a museum, national park, skating, camping etc. All these activities are very close to home. It still surprises me that some students rarely even leave this small town except to go to a little bigger town 15 miles away to shop. It is difficult for most of my students to see beyond their small village of 500 to myriad of possibilities that the world has to offer. Possibilities are what their parents want for them, but they often do not have the keys to unlock the door to learning. It is our job as educators to get the keys to the students, so they can unlock the doors to their educational dreams and future.
