My kindergarten students are thirsty for knowledge. They enter my classroom so eager to learn. My students are full of energy and are so precious and innocent. One of the things that makes them feel like a "big kid" is when they are able to read a book all by themselves. My students enter my classroom with varying backgrounds in literacy. Some of them already have a love of books and reading. While others, sadly, have rarely been read to or have even held a book in their hands. I strive to teach my students that reading is fun and powerful. I try to help even the most reluctant readers see that they can be a reader, too. It just takes time and practice to be a successful reader. We read each and every day in my classroom. Students read with me and also independently. Before they can read words they can "read" the pictures in the book. I meet my students where they are in their literacy development and help them to become confident independent readers.
