My students are fifth graders in California. We live in a farming community and many of the kids qualify for free lunch. They miss a lot of school due to their parents moving for work, or because they lack the structure at home to get them to school. A lot of our students rotate schools as they move in and out of various relatives homes and foster care. To say the least, this created gaps in their education that need to be filled. Fifth grade is the last grade of elementary school in our community, and honestly, as small as it is - it is their last chance to try and catch up.
