Our classroom supports a wide range of students aged 3-5. Their cultural background, language and economic situations are all different. They come from homes where a variety of languages are spoken. Some speak multiple languages, while others are working on learning a few words in one. Students who are typically developing learn alongside children who are signifcantly delayed in all areas of development (life skills, academics, social skills, language and physical development). Watching the children in our class grow and develop relationships is inspirational. The level of respect and kindness with which they treat each other is amazing in such young children. One of our favorite parts of the day is taking attendance; the students want to know who is absent and talk about why and if that friend is okay. These relationships are so important, often included in children's first words are their friend's names.
