My second grade class is very diverse and located in a very transient and impoverished district. There are currently 24 kids in my class and approx. 83% receive free/reduce lunch. 65% of my class began the year reading below grade level. Additionally, most of these students do not have access to reading materials at home and the materials we have in our classroom are not sent home in fear that they will be lost. As it is, my classroom barely has enough books for my children to read and we are sorely lacking in non-fiction.
