Our school began a new and innovative idea two years ago when we turned our 5th grade classrooms into "Academies of Interest and Inquiry." Each Academy is devoted to a specialize area, and at the end of 4th grade our students get to chose which Academy they would like to join based on their area of interest and the talents they possess. One of these is the Performing Arts Academy I have the privilege of being in charge of the Performing Arts Academy. I use the arts in any way I can to drive instruction in reading, writing and critical thinking. I have watched as students who have previously been unsuccessful in an academic environment blossom into talented actors and artists, and along the way improved their literacy skills. My students deserve all the help they can get to improve themselves academically. My young students work hard all year at becoming proficient in their chosen areas.
