Over 60% of our students are new immigrants from China, while the remaining student body are American-born students who attend our school to become proficient in Mandarin. All of our students are from low income families who face many difficulties at home, yet, come to school every day -- we have a very low absentee rate -- and do well in their classes. We have an overall 90% Regents passing rate and 98% of students continue their education in college. Students often stay after school to take part in extra-curricular activities or to do homework. They look to teachers for support as there is usually nobody at home and most teachers are in the building long after the last bell rings to fulfill this need. Some of our students are living with relatives, as their parents are still in China, while others share studio apartments with other families. Any assistance to make their education more fun and enjoyable would be greatly appreciated.
