Our rural school is comprised of students from diverse socioeconomic levels. Thirty three percent of them are lower income and on our state's free and reduced lunch program. The remaining sixty seven percent are a mixture of lower to upper class families living in the rural farming areas surrounding our school and in suburban housing developments closer to town. My students are in sixth through twelfth grade. The sixth through eighth grade students are housed at our public middle school. The ninth through twelfth grade students attend our public high school. I, being the only library media specialist for sixth through twelfth grades, split my time between the two schools. Our students are sheltered in some ways. In our small community, they do not often have the opportunity to interact with and experience other cultures. Books, however, give them the opportunity to visit different cultures and worlds.
