My students are bright children who are focused on issues of social justice, and they ask all the right questions. We have done a great deal of work in the realm of archetypes- we built a labyrinth, we studied the hero's journey. But for their 8th grade year, we focus on the journey within. The big questions. If the students know who they are as people, they are less likely to forget who they are when they get to high school and college, where it is easy to stray "from the path." My students are 40 13 and 14 year old kids in Western North Carolina. They attend a public middle school in the rural foothills of the Appalachian mountains. This year, They will learn about children all over the world to help promote education for everyone, especially girls.
