My students come from a community of close knit families of first and second generation Hmong-Americans. Many of them have never been exposed to the world outside of their immediate community. Some of them did not learn to speak English until they started to attend school. They like to use their hands to work with manipulative, build things, and learn through play. Their parents oftentimes do not have the means to provide the educational resources that can benefit them in this way. The school my students attend is a charter school geared towards teaching peace and preserving their culture. These students love colorful things, singing and learning through technology. This school is a place where parents feel safe sending their children to each day. They trust the teachers, administrators, and staff to teach and lead their children to a successful and culturally educated future.
