My students are 2nd graders in a Title I, low-income school in an urban area of Maryland. Many of my students have never been outside of the city they come from, and there is so much they have not been exposed to. Despite the day-to-day challenges they face, they manage to come to school everyday ready to learn. My students came into 2nd grade on a variety of reading levels. Reading is difficult for struggling students, and unfortunately, I've seen many students get discouraged and give up. On the other hand, there are students reading above grade level who could benefit from more challenging work.
