My students all live in an impoverished area where resources are scarce. Many of them pass through some of the most dangerous areas of our city in order to reach the safety and comfort of our school. They are grateful that the school became a charter school four years ago. Before the charter conversion, the school was the most dangerous middle school in Pennsylvania. Now, without excluding any children in our community, we are among the best and safest. We are making large strides in all of our academic areas, but our work isn't finished. My students have a real desire to succeed and still need some basic resources to do so.
