Before anything else, I need to say that my students have names and families, futures and dreams, all in equal measure and of equal worth as you or me. Some like art, or science, or soccer, or basketball, or dubstep, or death metal, or anime (actually, a ton of them like anime!). It so happens that the vast majority of them also are on free or reduced lunch, and often lack school basic school supplies that they need for learning. Unfortunately, many of my students are also used to engaging in math in a very passive way: the teacher shows a couple of problems that match exactly the type on a worksheet and the students then finish the worksheet. This project is mostly designed to get them out of that way of thinking about engaging with math.
