My students need additional resources to help with pre-writing skills. Some of my students receive Occupational Therapy services, and I want to supplement their therapy services by supporting their fine motor and pre-writing needs in my classroom writing center. My students with special needs are most successful when first provided with a multi-sensory teaching approach to writing. The first step of learning to write occurs when they are provided with opportunities to touch, trace and manipulate the shapes of letters. Once they become comfortable with this, then they are ready to begin expressing themselves through writing in a way that provides personal meaning for them. In addition to needing a variety of ways to express their writing, they also need adaptations for their writing utensils to assist with fine motor delays. Tools needed for my classroom include printed letter practice books, writing claws, write and wipe boards, and a pre-writing magnetic board.
