I've never met any kids as amazing as the students I work with now, for the simple fact that each one of them has experienced some form of trauma, obstacle, or challenge that would derail most people and their goals. Yet, these kids come to school each day with a desire and commitment to excel in their academics and graduate from school. I work in a middle school/high school in a highly urban city in California. My city is known for the millionaires and higher middle class families that have made their money with the tech boom, my students and their families are working class to say the least. Our school serves students from two housing projects up the street. 65% of our students qualify for free lunch. I could go on and on about the statistics but the fact of the matter is that my students have been through a lot, poverty, shootings, deaths, but they are so resilient and want to better themselves through education. I want to be able to help them and make school fun.
