My urban, low-level reading high school students for the most part come from low socio-economic homes, and the majority of them receive free and reduced breakfasts and lunches. Therefore, they often cannot afford even the most basic school supplies, and to add insult to injury, they must share equipment with other students as they cannot afford anything personal of their own. Their homes often lack the technology most of us come to take for granted, and it is in my classroom that they explore all avenues in order to improve their vocabulary and literacy!
