My students need some leveled books to spark their interest in reading at their own level. I am a second grade teacher in a high poverty area in Arizona. Every student in my class is learning English as their second language, which requires me to have a language rich environment. These students do not have the English support at home; making school the only place they hear grammatically correct English. Many of my students do have older siblings or friends to speak “playground English” with, but their academic vocabularies are quite limited. I spend a great amount of time each school day helping to teach this academic vocabulary and correct grammar. These students are extremely lucky in the fact that they have many students who are in a similar position. Our school consists only of Kindergarten through third grade in which more than half of the students are learning English.
