From Somalia to the Marshall Islands my students come from all over the world. Although most of my students are born in the United States the one thing they have in common is that they are all learning English as an additional language. These ELL (English Language Learners) are learning their academic content in a language (English) that is not their primary language. This presents a number of challenges to them and their academic success. It takes about 3 years for students to be able to communicate effectively in another language and another 5 years for them to be considered academically proficient in another language. Many of my students are socially proficient in English but lack the vocabulary necessary in English to be truly academically successful. This academic language needs continual support visual support. With technology knowledge is at your fingertips.
