My students this year are third graders who live in a high poverty neighborhood. Many of them do not have access to computers or the Internet at home. Access at school won’t be any different as there are no computers in classrooms nor do students have access to a computer technology teacher due to budget cut backs. These students are being compared to other third graders through nationally standardized tests that will inevitably reveal their lack of exposure to the world and its resources if no one attempts to connect them to it. These students battle many hardships many of us could never fathom yet find their way to school every day! Don’t they deserve the kind of education so many others just a few neighborhoods over receive? I know they do! Like all students, my students deserve an equal chance to succeed in this world regardless of their social status! I hope you share the same sense of urgency as I do!
