My students come from mostly Hispanic backgrounds. I have one autistic child in my class. They are very bright and interested in social issues. We are in a school in the suburbs of Miami, Florida. Most of the children do not have any experience with the idea of segregation or how African Americans were treated pre-civil rights. We are in the process of making the change to the Common Core Standards, which requires more complex text.
