I teach 6th grade -- the first year of middle school — in a Title I school in New York. Our students work very hard but they enter our school with a range of reading levels and other abilities. My greatest challenge as a teacher is to keep students engaged who have very different needs as students. This challenge is further compounded by a lack of individualizable resources. One thing I've found that helps increase student interest is having on hand a variety of audio books, but we need headphones for them to be used effectively during in-class reading time. This is especially important to students who aren't reading at home, meaning that the only time they're doing this is in class, when they should be practicing at home daily in addition to work done in class.
