This is what a lot of my students deal with every day. I pull kids out who have learning disabilities that make it hard for them to learn in a standard classroom setting, so I work with them to provide a more individualized curriculum and present the material to them in a way that they are able to understand. If there isn't a learning disability, I have many students who are under the Special Education classification of "emotional disturbance" which means they have been witnesses to tragedy of some kind. For example, I had a student who saw his father shot in front of him when he was only in first grade. You can only imagine what kind of impact this has on the learning environment when they get into school, with no support, resources, or knowledge for how to deal with this kind of trauma. My students are just as smart as a typical student in general education, they just have different learning styles that are not conducive to a typical classroom setting.
