My high school (grades 9-12) string students are as varied as the West Virginia families from which they hail. The school is located in a small town, in a county where half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Single-parent families comprise about one-fourth of the population. But the strings program reaches out to students of all economic levels, and provides instruments (donated by community members and others) for use by children whose families can't afford the monthly rental fee. A few of my high school students started learning to play an orchestral instrument in fourth or fifth grade, and by now are playing at an advanced level. But many students have been welcomed into the strings program during middle and high school. Some are still playing at a fairly rudimentary level. My students vary in talent and in how "captivated" they are by music and orchestra class, but they all share a desire to hone their skills in new and interesting ways.
