Since distance learning started on March 13th, I have worried about the growing number of students who speak through their silence. Although these students may have been reluctant learners in the classroom, through the power of education they were growing. I am deeply concerned about their well being now and how their stress levels will rise when we return to school in the fall.
In my classroom we regularly reflect on our social and emotional needs, stress and anxiety levels and setting goals using bullet journal tools. This project will bring this coping tool directly to students.
I will send these materials to students via mail. Students who are not completing work and those who have not responded to communication will be top priority. Working with our school support staff, I will also send materials to students who have been anxious in the past. All eighth grade students will feel nervous transitioning to the high school, and this year there is added stress. These kits will provide an opportunity to lower that anxiety through reflection and creative self-expression.
