My students can understand the Cuban Revolution when they are immersed into a story about what happened and how it affected the lives of people their own age. With stories like The Red Umbrella, students can develop empathy, appreciation of diversity, and connection with peers who have varying life experiences. By reading a story about the loss of freedom, students can better appreciate the freedoms they enjoy! My students will use the novel, The Red Umbrella, to develop interpersonal skills, historical and civic knowledge, and appreciation of diversity as they immerse themselves into the world of the Cuban Revolution through the eyes of a child.
