My students come from a wide array of backgrounds. They live in a low-economic and low-resourced communities, and are dynamic children who really want to learn and succeed. My students are unique because they are being placed in a temporary alternative setting when they are not being successful in their classrooms. The goal of the alternative setting is to stabilize students and provide them with skills to manage their feelings and behaviors and be equipped to be successful. This year is the first year this program has a social worker on their staff and materials are non-existent! These students are quite eager to be successful, just a little reluctant to participate. They are meeting me for the first time and hesitant to trust and open up. I know that with fun materials and creative ways to approach their situations, they can engage in conversations and learning and successfully return to their home school environments.
