My students rocked the first week of kindergarten and stole my heart simultaneously. They have a fascination with reading together and using their imaginations to create masterpieces worthy of applause. They are highly social and beyond eager to begin their transition into elementary school. However, coming from a severely low income area, my students lack the basic supplies most take for granted. Many are unable to secure classroom supplies for the year such as scissors, age-appropriate pencils and composition notebooks. They often have no books available at home to encourage reading and have very limited access to materials. Our school is a neighborhood school, most students walk about a mile every morning, and unfortunately many of our students don't have the opportunity to venture out of the neighborhood often. We have a small school, but the materials given are scarce and we started this school year without any new pencils, erasers, or paper. My students deserve more.
