My ESL (English as a Second Language) students come from various countries, and have all ended up in fast-paced, busy New York City. Their hard-working parents speak very little to no English, therefore they are left alone to struggle to keep up with challenging curricula in English. They are expected to learn English fluently enough to take the NYS Regents Exams in all subjects, sometimes within one year of coming to the United States. This, to me, seems an impossible task. However, I have seen some students do it, but not all are successful. My school has very limited resources for gen-Ed classrooms, and is even less equipped for ESL. I have to borrow, recycle, and beg for resources that will help my students reach their goals. I will be forever moved by my students' hard-working attitudes, how they never give up, and how thankful they are for anything I teach them. I am in desperate need of ELL resources to successfully continue teaching these wonderful students.
