The students are primarily African-American students in a 9th grade Intensive Reading class. They are all from a low socio-economic background and are currently identified as the lowest 25% in their graduating class. Additionally, they have been unsuccessful on the states' annual reading assessment and read below grade level. Many of them suffer from low self-esteem and have given up on themselves. They currently attend a Birth - 12th Grade school in the state of Florida. The school is 94% African American and has a free and reduced lunch rate of 99%. The school is designed as a "small school continuum" which provides opportunities for more individualized instruction. The school is working to decrease the percentage of dropouts within the African-American community it serves. It is also working towards increasing the number of students who are taking Advanced Placement and dual-enrolled college courses. Currently it has a high school graduation rate of 98%.
