My students are simply the hardest working nine and ten year olds I have ever met. They attend a public charter school in D.C. that operates on an extended day. Students are at school from 7:45am until 5:00pm. Our school's mission is to bridge the educational divide in our city by increasing the number of students from under-served communities with the academic preparation to succeed in competitive high schools and colleges. My fourth grade students understand the mission of our school and work hard every day in the hopes of attending a college prep high school and later, the college of their dreams. While my students know that academics are the number one priority at our school, they also need the chance to do things developmentally appropriate, like getting up and moving around the room to the classroom meeting space or having fun working and reading together on the library rug. They currently do not have this ability because of a lack of resources to fund a meeting space in our classroom
