I teach first grade in the state of Pennsylvania at an inner city public school. We are a small K-4 Elementary School. Most of my students are ELL and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. There a 97% poverty level at my school. Many of my students enter with large deficits in language development and this directly impacts their reading development. It is important that my students close the gaps in their reading achievement by the end of first grade or their chances of being successful in futures grades decreases.
