My classroom includes kiddos ages 3-5 that come from lower income families that can not afford private preschool. The students in my classroom are extremely diverse. I have students from many countries that speak many different languages. I also have multiple special education students within my classroom. Many of the students that come to me struggle with playing. Many of them don't know how to handle books or play with toys because they have not had previous experiences with them. It is crucial for kids this age to play. Playing helps increase vocabulary, improve fine and gross motor skills, problem solve, create theories about the world and test those theories, literacy development, math skills, etc. Without these experiences these students would go into kindergarten very unprepared and many times developmentally not ready.
