Building a classroom library of engaging and age appropriate books will keep my students motivated and excited as they try to reach their goal of reading 40 books in 40 weeks throughout the school year. Rather than making my students read a class book of what I think would be engaging to them, students will instead be given various authors and genres to choose from. Student will then be able to apply the reading (and writing) skills they learn in class and apply it to the book they are personally reading. Students will also be able to recommend books that should be purchased for our class library. With that list, I'm hoping to purchase more than one copy so that my students can enjoy literature circles as well as book clubs.
