I have been teaching 3rd grade in the same room for the last 12 years and the chairs have never been replaced so they are old, cracked, and not comfortable. In addition, these chairs are way to big for my students as they are meant for upper graders so most of my student's feet can't touch the ground.
When I work at home I recline in my chair and make myself comfortable, so I want my students to be just as comfortable when they are working in our classroom. Students need options and be able to make good choices. I feel by having several choices for comfortable seating, my students will be excited to come to school and jump right into learning the day's lessons.
How fun would it be to sit on the floor with a cool cushion, sit in the back on a tall stool, or use an exercise ball rather than a chair at your desk? Expectations and standards are not the same as they were just a few years ago and we have very little if any control over these, but I can control my classroom setting and make it much more kid-friendly and definitely more comfortable.
