I work in a low income junior high. We have the lowest socioeconomic status of any of the junior highs in our district. Many of my students are living below poverty. They do not have access to resources at home to encourage them to do well in school. Our boys and girls do not see how math connects to the real world so it can be quite confusing to them. Many of the students have learned English as a second language and have missed a great deal of math time to do this in school. They are an amazing bunch of students who want to do well, but they need just the right nudge to get them interested.
