My students are the most amazing kids I know! They come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds with a ratio of about 60% Hispanic to 40% Anglo. It is challenge and honor at the same time to have in the same class students whose only meal of the day will be the reduced price lunch they will get from the cafeteria. At the same time, I also have students that come from middle class more affluent environments. You can also see the results of the baggage they bring in. Some of my students come from a home where they are being read to, where academic achievement is quintessential blessed with a rich written and spoken language proficiency; I also have the students that are in the opposite side of the spectrum, with parents working 2 or 3 jobs, but no time to read to my kids. No matter what, our school's goal is for our students to become English/Spanish bilingual and bi-literate by the time they complete the 5th grade, using the the Gomez & Gomez Two Way Dual Language Program.
