My students live in an impoverished neighborhood in the state of Illinois. They are hungry for both attention and new knowledge. These kids rarely have an opportunity to spend time outside unless they are at school under the supervision of a teacher or teacher aide. They are delightful and eager to play outside even on the coldest of days because it is rare for them to have the chance to do so because of the unfavorable atmosphere that looms in their neighborhood. My students are in constant danger when not in school. They rarely have for time for interaction with their peers unless it is inside. The school they attend is in a neighborhood school where more than 90% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The population of our school has increased by 30% this school year. These are children who need more equipment and activities which allow for team-building and focus on keeping them out of mischief. My students love a challenge and they love to figure things out for themselves.
