I want to support my second graders as readers, but I also want to support their character development. I have some second grade and picture books, but many of my books are more appropriate for fifth-eighth grade because that is what I have taught for ten years. With a more diverse set of books to choose from, I am supporting students in valuing and learning from a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds. I value reading out loud together as a safe place to discuss themes and issues in an age-appropriate way. I will continue to do so with my second graders with a variety of books. The carpet would be a great place to come together (using social distancing procedures through the square spaces) to read and talk about issues together as a class. The squares would also allow me to work with a small group, while also keeping a safe distance.
