My students are English I students and we read some heavy texts. Remember "The Odyssey" or "Romeo and Juliet"? Classics, but not always the most captivating for students. My goal as a teacher is to find texts that compliment the classics. "All American Boys" is a novel that teaches the same themes as "To Kill a Mockingbird", but in a more relevant and relatable way. One of the biggest turn offs for reluctant readers is encountering a text they feel they cannot relate to. "All American Boys" was named a SCYABA novel of the year, and when I read it I immediately thought how much my freshmen would love it. It touches on race issues, peer pressure, family drama, and friendship; in short, all themes my students can empathize with. I know my students will love reading this book and talking about current events that correspond with the themes. They would also love to do a research project to help them understand what the author is commenting on and why. I believe this novel will help show students that they can enjoy reading, and that contemporary texts are just as meaningful as the classics.
