I teach Freshman English. My students are mostly middle class, but we have a growing population of minority and economically disadvantaged students. Our school has recently adopted the SLC Freshman Academy model in order to help students make a stronger connection to high school, improve their classroom performance, learn how to set and achieve goals, and foster a successful transition year so that our students do not drop-out at the alarming number they do now. We have a structure to help foster student connections to school, now we need to build relevance into the curriculum by connecting classic literature to history and how it influences modern society.

About my class
