I teach twelfth grade English and am the student activity advisor for highly at-risk teenagers at a continuation high school near the US/Mexico border. Our kids are the most vulnerable population in a high school district that is already facing huge budget cuts, loss of property tax revenue, and increasing levels of community poverty. Every student who attends my school has been sent here by their comprehensive high school because they are deemed to be in danger of becoming a dropout. Students at my school face many challenges including substance abuse, poverty, abuse, gang affiliation, homelessness, pregnancy, and all the typical problems of any urban high school.
