My students come from a close knit community in the state of Hawaii. Bound together by strong religious ties yet at the mercy of a faltering economy. Many of my students live in homes that are too small to house all the extended relatives that all live together. Parents work long hours and in most cases both parents need to work to make ends meet. More then half of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Yet through it all my students come to school with a happy heart. My goal is to give them a place they can come to, to call their own. A place where they feel safe, where they are free to explore and learn. I want to give them every opportunity to experience literature in various capacities. This project will help me do it.
