I am a Pre K art teacher in Newark, NJ. I love teaching art to 3 and 4 year olds. This year my students each have their own art supplies and are learning how to care for them. Although they are not sharing materials , there are many projects that require additional materials. The self portrait collage is one such example. Multicultural colored construction paper and yarn are examples of materials for the collage that are necessary. These materials will allow the students to choose their skin tone and hair color thereby personalizing the portrait. Adding their favorite outfit with paint and drawings of their favorite foods, toys, pets, etc.. makes each portrait a reflection of who they are and what they like.
