Through this sgraffito project, I hope to give students a way to elevate their art work with a new technique that is quite striking. Students can achieve high contrasts and eye-catching color splashes with this project, and I think when they see their final projects come out, they will be hooked on ceramics. I want my students to explore a narrative in these pieces that will ultimately culminate in a showing at the Spring Art Show for our school district. The project essentially calls for the use of velvet underglazes on greenware. Designs are drawn onto the underglaze layer once it has dried, then special scratching styluses are required to strip away parts of the design to leave behind a striking contrast between the clay and the underglaze. When these pieces are fired, other colors may be added in layers as well. Color is added to these objects with wonderful effect. With this assignment, my students will be able to choose one color plus black or white to limit the use of materials.
