In Pre-K, students learn by playing and doing hands-on activities. I am asking for books and activities that go along with the themes we learn throughout the year. These actvities will be used in our dramatic play center, literacy and math stations, as well as our small group learning time. I focus a lot on literacy in our learning. I try to integrate it throughout our learning stations and centers. This is where the books come in. These books give our students an introduction into themes such as health and safety, community helpers, places we go, etc. This also introduces them to new vocabulary which they can take with them to use while they are playing! In our dramatic play center, the students get to act out what they have learned. One week they may be shopping for healthy foods, using currency, and sorting vegetables. Another week they may be helping their friends with pretend "boo boos" or putting out a pretend fire. Pre-K students learn through imaginative play which is why I have also asked for items to use in our dramatic play center such as costumes and props. Other things I have included in my wish list is manipulatives and items to be used in small group learning. At 4 and 5 years old it is hard to learn by sitting on a carpet or at a desk with a large group of students listening to a teacher talk. This is why small group instruction is so important! They get to learn more and do hands-on activities that teaches them things they could never learn by just looking at pictures. They can use their senses to discover and learn. As the teacher, I can focus more on each and every student and reach their individual needs.
