Living in a high poverty, rural area, many of my students are from migrant families and roughly half speak English as a second language. Many deal with drugs in the home, parents in prison, foster care and trying home conditions. Accruing a home library is not always a priority. What print is available is not always in English, adding additional challenges for my students as they attempt to develop their, often struggling, reading and writing skills.
