I am the Reading Specialist for an Elementary school of 800+ students. Our school serves children ages 4 through 5th grade with a very diverse population and over 65% receiving free or reduced-price lunch each day. Many of the parents do not speak English or do not have the ability to help their children with homework, and reading is not always encouraged or reinforced in the homes. I want these children to have every opportunity to read for pleasure and develop a lifelong love of reading, but that goal requires books, something that many of these children do not have in their homes. Children come to school with an excitement about reading and learning and I want to fuel that excitement before it goes out, due to missed opportunity.
