This year I have 24 students. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I have some that speak another language at home so during the school day is the only time that they are really exposed to English. I have students who have learning disabilities and are more than one grade level behind in reading. I also have a number of students who live at or below the poverty level meaning they qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our school has such a high number of these students we are actually able to serve breakfast for free to all students. Many students who enter my room find that the 7 or 8 hours they are with me are the most safe, educational, and productive hours of their day. I, of course do have students who are also on grade level and exceeding grade level in all areas. With such a wide variety of students in my class, I find it challenging at times to bring one commonality into the classroom. Exposure to worldly events on their level would help bridge this gap.
